Headlines | Codeine Nation Update | May 8 |
Following our headline review “Codeine Nation: The addiction of Northern Nigeria”, comments and suggestion poured in endlessly. A few days after, the Nigerian government banned the production and sale of codeine containing syrups. This action was to a large extent applauded albeit many were skeptical on what the implementation will look like.
Fast forward to May 8, 2018 and it became necessary for a Codeine Nation Update. Several news outlets reported that the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) had shut Peace Standard Pharmaceutical Limited, Bioraj Pharmaceutical Limited and Emzor Pharmaceuticals Ind. Ltd. following their implication in the codeine syrup crisis. Many are questioning the rational in this bearing in mind that the production and sale of these syrups were legal prior to the codeine abuse saga.
More has been said about Emzor than the other 2 companies being that it is one of the biggest Pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria. Emzor, on its own wonders why NAFDAC sealed one of its production lines despite cooperation.
“On Wednesday the 2nd of May NAFDAC inspected one of our production sites where Emzolyn with codeine was made. There were given full access and our complete cooperation, with no issues raised at the time.
“On Monday the 7th of May, NAFDAC sealed the inspected site without giving us a reason nor an explanation of what the violation of the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Code was and it will be wrong for us to speculate as to the reason why,” the company said.
At the moment, there is no counter response from the NAFDAC. Many comments on social media have criticized the government agency for wrongfully punishing the producing companies instead of fixing the main problem which is with the purchase and administration of these drugs. Some people have also inferred that the action was one of those deliberate attempts to shut down businesses mainly run by the Southeastern part of the country. Others have countered this by stating that other companies were also affected.
What are your own thoughts on these events? Has the government done the right thing?
