When Forgiveness Becomes An Offence

The Leaders’ Chatroom | When Forgiveness Becomes An Offence | July 3 | Written by Xonto |

“Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Who is familiar with this quote? Yes, it’s a verse in “The Lord’s Prayer” as taught by Christ to his disciples when they asked him to teach them how to pray. Forgiveness is divine and if you’ve ever been there, you will know that it takes a lot to forgive someone who has hurt you so deeply that the scars remain for your entire life.

So, should we learn to forgive? Yes. However, there is something you must do otherwise your forgiveness will eventually make you a fool and become an offence against yourself. My advice to you is “Forgive, but never forget lest you be taken unawares by unrepentant foes”. Are you wondering why I am saying this? I’ll explain and it’s actually all about leadership in Nigeria and I bet it will be applicable to many other parts of the world as well.

In Nigeria, we have found a way to make light, very weighty things. There are multitudes of criminals and depraved people who are hiding under the umbrella of “the forgiven” either by omission or commission. These individuals, having received pardon via political affiliation or the inability of our tamed laws to convict them, parade themselves as leaders and a voice of the people. It’s a shame that we forgive so quickly and forget even quicker. I will shy away from stating names but if you dig a little into the past of most of the so-called leaders Nigeria has, you will find out that most would have been banished to the evil forest in the days of our ancestors. They and their families would have been bathed in eternal shame for the evil they have to us.

Don’t be fooled, these men and women are unrepentant is their ways so we dare not forget and let them ascend to positions where they make policies and laws for the rest of us who have chosen the path of good. We need people of proven good character and integrity to steer our ship if we are ever to make it to that glorious destination.

A thief is a thief, a bigot is a bigot, a murderer is a murderer, a rapist is a rapist, a criminal is a criminal. We may choose to forgive them, but never again should we forget and let them make our society the ridicule of all nations.

Forgiveness? Count me in. Forgetfulness? Count me out. Let’s retake this country, reconcile it and make it great.

What do you think? It’s the Leaders’ Chatroom…let’s interact!
